Tutorial: Adding Words to a Photo Via Picnik

If you are at a loss for words and do not have a photo program that will help you add them to your photo, then one suggestion is picnik.com. It's a free online photo program that allows you to edit your photo and add captions. You can sign up, but you don't have to.

So how about a tutorial?
I wanted to add screen shots in here to help, but it doesn't seem to want to work.

First, head here:
Picnik.com

Hit the "get started now" button in the center and picnik will open up for you.

Under the "Hi Guest" hit the "Upload your photo" button and search for the photo you'd like to use.

It will upload (hopefully) and come up in the edit menu. There are tabs on the top of the page, they are Home, Library, Edit, Create and Save and Share.

Choose the "Create" tab.

You will automatically be put into the effects menu and there next to it you will see a text tab, click that.

From here you can type in your text and pick out your font and then hit add. There is a pop out side menu that allows you to pick the color and effects like Italics, bold and there's even blending options. You can also right click the font to see additional options.

Course, there are many other things you can do with picnik from editing effects to frames..so explore some.

When you are finished, click on the save and share tab and you will be able to save your photo to your computer.

Any questions? Feel free to ask. Here's a photo I did in picnik.

  2. great tutorial Danni. I used Picnik some and a little of Gimp, but it's hard to learn, at least for me.

  4. Thanks Danni for doing this tutorial! Picnik is so very easy to use, you can't really get lost with how to do things. If you click on the question mark next to the effects you choose, it will explain about the effect and also you just click the undo button if you change your mind and want to go back a step or two.
If you use Fllickr for posting you can also do these steps in Flickr.
This is also using Picnik but giving you a limited version. Up to the left you see a button that says "Picnik" and if you click that it will take you to the Picnik site. There you will get more free options. The ones that say "Premium" you won't be able to use unless you pay a fee. I just paid and find it well worth it. In Premium they offer more options for everything including fonts for text, but they also have a fantastic "Clone Tool" that I use a lot.
I also want to add that you don't have to add your words/text onto the actual photo itself if you don't want to. If you click on "Frames" in Picnik, and then "Border" you will get a frame and then if you slide the "Caption" lever to the right you will get a big space underneath where you can put your words as part of the frame. Here's an example:

I also use my Picasa 3 program which is on my laptop.
