Images And Words Week 182 - Language

Greetings from Sweden!

Since many Swedish children comes in contact with English an early age. I was fortunate to begin studying it in 4th Grade, when I was nine years old. When I was thirteen I read JRR Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings for the first time. Even though it was quite a challenge, I enjoyed it very much. As the years passed and I continued to read, listen and speak English my ability got steadily better and now I can, with some pride, say that I am fluent. So the week's theme is Language. Hope you'll enjoy this challenge. Im looking forward to see your entries. Enjoy!

  1. Thanks Anders for this interesting theme.
I like your explanation about how you learned to read and write in English Indeed you are most fluent in English and I admire your determination to excel in both the spoken and written form of the English language.
I love your quote on the gorgeous photo of the beautiful collection from your Swedish custom.
    I shall return.

  3. Haven't a clue as where to start thinking about this entry. I did get my Images and Words site on Blogger set up. Welcome to stop by and become a follower: Maybe I can get this link thing to work, don't understand why a site as complicated as blog spot is, doesn't do links with a simple copy and paste. This way is so much trouble.

  6. Speaking English and cockney as my mother tongue, and living in Switzerland which has 4 basic official languages (French, German, Italian and Rhaeto-Romance) Languages are an important part of my life. I also speak Russian - just one of my hobbies. Our national language in the German speaking part of Switzerland is Swiss German which is a German dialect and the language I speak at home. Not an easy dialect for many to understand and even the Germans have their problems. My photo is very similar and I really did start learning Arabic and Turkish. I just cannot leave it alone.

  7. Hi Anders. Will have to have a think on this one. Am a bit stumped at the moment. Was interesting to read about how you came to speak English fluently. When I lived in Sweden for a while, I was impressed at how so many Swedish people were quite fluent in English. One of the funny things is that one friend I had over there, Crystal was her name, had learned a lot of English from watching American TV shows. So much so, in fact, that she had developed a sort of American accent when speaking English!! I used to tease her about it a lot. I loved living in Sweden, but found learning the Swedish language hard going, which is unusual, as I am usually pretty good at learning new languages. I had an additional problem in that I asked my Swedish girlfriend, her daughters and all our friends to speak Swedish around me to encourage me to practice and take part in discussion. However, they were all so polite, they always insisted in speaking English, so that I could be included. It was so nice of them, but it did not help my practice at all !!!!
