Images and Words Week 73: Creature Features

Greetings from Amy and welcome to week 73 of Images and Words.  My theme for this week is "Creature Features," and I invite you to feature any creature that you wish.  Creepy crawly creatures would be great!  But you may also post creatures that are furry or feathered.  And being originally from San Francisco I should encourage photos of humans who warrant the title of "creature."  Here's my entry:

This is a strangely colored praying mantis was found by my son in our "outdoor living room", and was relocated to my veggie garden where he was safe from our chickens and hopefully helped me with our grasshopper problem this year.  A friend of mine gave me this quote which was attributed to 16th century naturalist Moufet, who is also known as Thomas Muffet.  Legend has it that he wrote "Little Miss Muffet" based on an incident with his step-daughter, but there's no actual proof of this.  Makes a nice story though.

I hope you will enjoy this theme.

The Rules:

Each week we will post an original photo with words on it. The idea behind this group is to expand our minds through our photography.

Photos must be your own, but the words can be someone else's as long as credit is given after the words.

Your post can either be serious, or if you'd like comical, but never obscene .

Posts can either have one word on them, quotes, or full poems ... Your choice.

All posts are to be done on your own site in a blog form with a link back to it being left here.

New topics will be posted on Sundays.

Posts can be made through Saturday.

One post per person only please.

Also, Mia posted a tutorial on how to post nice sized photos so people don't have to click to enlarge a photo.  If you missed it, just click "Prev." at the bottom of this post.

  2. love seeing these and their eggs... this year I can't say that I have, which is unusual. Heck even my chocolate lab found one last year, nearly injured it and I put it on one of the hydrangea bushes

should have some interesting posts to look at this week, great nature topic

  3. Awesome shot Amy.Love the quote... I think that is a Walking Stick which is a member of the Mantis family. There are several different varieties of them. It could be a mantis though some of them change color with the season so as to better disguise themselves. Be back with mine later I have lots of creepy crawly creatures.

  4. It's not a walking stick, it's definitely a praying mantis. Changing colors with the season would make sense, especially here in the desert where everything is brown in summer.

  12. Very nice bug pic, Amy. Now - a slight warning of potential shock for you all - my entry may seem a tad morbid - but I hope you can see beyond that.
