Images and Words Week 108: Time

Greetings from Amy and welcome to week 108 of Images and Words! I keep declaring this string of illnesses and injuries to be over, but it hasn't ended yet. It might not end until the boys are out of school and are no longer exposed to so many cold viruses? I just have to wait out my time. And so I chose "Time" for my theme.

These aren't actually our eggs, I took this photo on the "Boise Tour du Coop 2010". At first I tried using a photo of Francine with our first egg that was laid by Lois, but honestly it was kind of painful. So I chose this photo for its calming complementary colors. I hope you will enjoy my theme!

Here are the rules:

Each week we will post an original photo with words on it. The idea behind this group is to expand our minds through our photography.

Photos must be your own, but the words can be someone else's as long as credit is given after the words.

Your post can either be serious, or if you'd like comical, but never obscene .

Posts can either have one word on them, quotes, or full poems ... Your choice.

All posts are to be done on your own site in a blog form with a link back to it being left here.

New topics will be posted on Sundays.

Posts can be made through Saturday.

One post per person only please.

  14. Our hen, Francine, got up on her own this morning!!!!! She has been ill and refusing to come out of the hen house, so we've been forcibly removing her once or twice per day so she could get up and walk around. This morning she got up on her own!!!!!

  15. Did you know there is a powdered antibiotic that you can dilute in drinking water for your chickens? I would put it into the drinking water for the muscovies once every 6 weeks as a precautionary, for a few days as suggested by a gal who raises chickens. It's very affordable and since you have but a few chickens, it would last quite a long time.

I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the product but it comes in a 'pouch' and surely your feed and grain store would carry it. Glad Francine is doing better....hope it continues.

  16. Thanks! But what's been making her sick is a mycotoxin (toxic fungus) that grows on peanuts. The previous homeowners fed peanuts to the squirrels, so there are peanuts all over our yard. We're trying to clean them all up, but then the squirrels will dig them up and leave the shells around. The chickens go bug hunting inside the shells, ingest the toxin, and get sick.

  17. so...wouldn't the antibiotic work at both the illness and then as a preventative?

  18. I'm afraid not. Antibiotics work only on bacteria, not on fungi. The first time she was sick, before she was diagnosed, we put on her an antibiotic because a bacteria seemed likely but now that we know it's a mycotoxin we know that antibiotics won't be effective. The only thing that helps is supportive care like multivitamins (she has a heart murmur so if she gets anemic then she becomes lethargic, which happened with her first illness), plus also yogurt mixed with scratch which is high in fat to help her keep her weight up.

  20. Aww poor Francine was only doing what came natural. Foraging for food. Pity about those peanuts and their toxins. You certainly have a job there Amy to keep her away from the Squirrels peanuts. I guess a large enclosure might help her not to stray too far away. Glad that she was able to venture out on her own today.
