Images And Words ~ Week 216 ~ Theme ~ Looking Skywards

Welcome To Week 216 of Images And Words.
It is a very crisp and cold night here in South Australia.

Last Friday it was a very significant time of the year for us down here in the Southern Hemisphere also for  those of you living in the Northern Hemisphere with the marking of the Winter Solstice in the South and The Summer Solstice for those living in the North.

The winter solstice is the solstice that occurs in winter. It is the time at which the sun appears at noon at its lowest altitude above the horizon.

In the Northern Hemisphere this is the Southern solstice, the time at which the Sun is at its southernmost point in the sky, which usually occurs on December 21 to 22 each year.In the Southern Hemisphere this is the Northern solstice, the time at which the Sun is at its northernmost point in the sky, which usually occurs on June 20 to 21 each year.

The axial tilt of Earth and gyroscopic effects of the planet's daily rotation keep the axis of rotation pointed at the same point in the sky. As the Earth follows its orbit around the Sun, the same hemisphere that faced away from the Sun, experiencing winter, will, in half a year, face towards the Sun and experience summer. Since the two hemispheres face opposite directions along the planetary pole, as one polar hemisphere experiences winter, the other experiences summer.

Hence this weekend is often referred to here as the Winter Solstice weekend.

Another event worth noting here this evening is the appearance of A Super Moon.
Supermoons occur when the full moon coincides with the Moon reaching the closest point to the Earth in its elliptical orbit -and tonight that will happen.

My photo of tonight's Super Moon is being used for this weeks theme.

Our Theme This Week is :

Looking Skywards.

I look forward to viewing your I&W this week

Cheers From Milli.

The New Rules:

Each week we will post an original photo creatively edited or not.

All photos or collages must contain words somewhere on the image or placed in an area on the image most suitable to be seen clearly by all.

The idea behind this group is to expand our minds through
our photography in a creative manner.

Photos must be your own, but the words can be someone else's as long as credit is given to the original author, unless unknown, whereby a simple "author unknown" will suffice.

Your post can either be serious, or if you'd like, comical,
but never obscene .

Posts can either contain one word, sayings, statements, quotes, or full poems ... As long as the words fit the theme, it is Your choice.

All posts are to be done on your own site in a blog form
with a link back to it being left here or on Muze.

New topics will be posted on Sundays.

Posts can be made through to the following Saturday.

One post per person only please..

  10. Just have not had the time for online participation this summer but that is a good thing for me -- busy busy with life outside the internet. Taking lots of photos as usual. Getting in some "horse" time, etc. Several family activities, both happy and sad.
